You awaken to godawful static overlaying a female voice that's too monotone to be anything but a recording. The static makes it difficult to understand the warning, but it's clearly a warning if your surroundings tell you anything...

You're buckled into a sturdy seat bolted to the wall behind you. Around you, there are dozens of others like you, some awake and others still unconscious, but it seems most of the seats lining the walls are occupied. The lights are dim, likely auxiliary lighting, leaving you mostly in the dark. You smell smoke and hear the sizzling crackle of electrical systems popping and shorting out. Some of the seats were jarred off the wall, leaving the occupants either wounded or dead. Count yourself lucky all you have is a headache and various aches accounted to whiplash.

You appear to be in a drop ship or an escape vessel of some form but the pilot is dead and the hull bears a massive gash where it buckled under the impact and sheered off. Through the door-sized opening, you can see vegetation. The air that wafts in is heavy with a humid heat, but it's obviously breathable.

Once you make your way outside, you'll see greenery: Trees, grass, and shrubs tangled with vines that grow wildly and suffocate the trees they climb. In the distance, behind the ship, you can make out a sandy desert that seems to stretch on endlessly. Forward through the trees, however, you may see a crumbling wall, but more importantly, you'll see signs of civilisation. Buildings and other structures seem contained within those decrepit walls. Maybe the natives can fill you in on what's going on, because the last thing you remember isn't being in an escape shuttle. As a matter of fact, you don't remember much about your arrival or where you are. But it's going to be a bit of a hike, better get moving. Though you might want to grab the backpack of supplies under your seat before you go.

"W̞͓̝͓̓̀̍̒͘͜ȃ̢̗̪̤͇̔̃̚͝░̟͙̯̳̱̈͂̈́̈́͠n̬̘̬̤̠͛̅̈́͋͝i͓̟͈͎͙̐̆̈́̔̓n̡̟̤̟̤̑͐͋͐̚g̩̱͖͉̻͌͛̈͆̈́!̧̪̰͇̦̓̂̆̌͝ ̢͔̣̠̗̾̉́̌̒C̢̥̟͍͊͊͑̀̚ͅr̛͙̪̙̟͐̽̓̅͜i̫͖̻̣̘̽̑͂̾̎t̩͇̦̬̞͊̌̑̈́͝i̡̳̠̞̐̿̍̎̀͜c̡͕͙͕͕̓̊̌̾͘å̼̯͍̙̲̍̏̚͝l̢̥͉̮̙̋̆͐̆́ ̢̰̞͕̯̋̈́̈́̋͌f͇͔̟̻̈̽͌̒̉ͅa̳̰̠͉͔͒̑̈̈͘i̟̭̦̺͎̍̾̽̈́̐░͕̣̥̭͛̿̓̽̐ͅ░̰̪̠͇͍̆͛̀͝͝░̘̱̩̳̘͆̈́̆̀̚e̛̻͈̳̳̺̊̔̚̕.͙̟̳̼̾̀̅͊͊ͅ"

With that, the power dies, leaving the drop ship in the dark, crackling and groaning as the hull cools from its catastrophic re-entry.

Traversing the Forest

Between the crash and the ruined city is a lush forest full of skittish wild life, the ruins of a farmhouse-like structure, various flora, and the occasional body. Try not to get too close to those bodies, kids. They have a tendency to wake up and try to get ya. The closer to the city one gets, the more frequently they'll see a dormant body.

Hopefully you took the time to set up your small ear piece. Once inserted into the ear, the device will prompt you for your name. Once spoken, the device in your ear will be given its own address and all someone has to do is tap the button on their ear piece, speak "private to" then their friend's name, and it will open a private channel to the comm device coded with that name. Open radio signals can be sent by simply tapping the button and speaking.

Once you reach the city gates, you will find a mass of corpses piled against the closed gates. These corpses will stir when they catch the scent of the survivors or hear their approach. You may want to take care of the dormant infected before they fully regain awareness. Or, you know, trip the closest person to you and run like hell. Maybe they'll be too distracted chewing on your former friend to follow...

Once inside the city, you'll meet its only surviving occupant. He's a bit unique and a bit... well... he's unique.

⨷ TK Baha's Warm Welcome

[TALK]

"Smells like livin' folk. Yer just lucky I got no munitions left."

Sitting on a porch with a shotgun balanced in his lap was a scarred gentleman wearing dark goggle-like glasses. He was missing a leg and looked a little worse for the wear. His voice was thick with a drawl, but he seemed to be well and alive. He chuckled and lowered the shotgun back to his lap, patting the barrel.

"Naw, ain't seen nothin' worth shootin' in a long time. Heehee! Ohhh-hoo boy, you lot've seen better days. Well, come on over here and git that gate shut before somethin' with an appetite thinks we're open for business." TK smiled and laughed again, beckoning the shipwrecked survivors to come closer. "Let's see. First things first, you lot gotta have somewhere to stay. Hotel's open an' prices 're cheaper than ever! Forgive the staff, they ain't too lively, though if you know what I mean. Heeheehee! You get it, right? 'cause they're all dead. Make yerselves at home. You're gonna be here a while."

TK pulls out an old, worn, folded pamphlet and holds it out. There are plenty to go around. "This here's a tourist's guide ta everythin' ya need to know. Or, well, kinda some of it. Anyway, it's useful. Take it. The name's TK Baha and I been around these parts a while. Anything you need, you let me know, okay?"

"You got a good set a' legs, right? See, I gotta ask you a favour. I ain't been keeping up with things. Gonna need you to find me a power cell for this here transceiver. Think I stashed the last one at the hotel reception desk. Or was it the minimart? The fuel station? Anyway, you get me that and I'll get this here piece of scrap workin' again."

Athena had a question for Bucky on the tip of her tongue but her manners kept her from blurting it out. She was curious why one of Steve's teammates would have a problem with him. She thought about Frank Walker and how he had hated her when he found out she wasn't human like he was, and realized that not all dislike was rational. So she smiled over at Glenn first and nodded at him as a way of saying hello. And then her eyes fell on Bucky and she smiled more, just so he'd feel like she didn't have a problem with him.

"I'm not sure we all would've met if the circumstances were different." It felt like a valid fact to point out, even as she laughed at her own observation.

"I've never had a family before. And my only friend has a problem with me, for reasons I'm sure he can justify. I don't have anyone here, so I think Daryl's right in saying that this is all of us. And all of us should vote on what we're going to do."

Which meant it was time to look around the area to see if they could stay here or needed to keep going. She could potentially find a place for supplies to be hidden away at least. She glanced up at Daryl as she moved away from him, making a sweep of her head to signal she was going to take a look around.

Daryl caught her arm as she started off. Three fingers on her shoulder. Not to stop her entirely, but to make her pause and look up at him. He met her eye straight on, jaw clenching as he swallowed. Signs he was mad about something, but his expression showed more pain than anything. When he spoke, his tone was firm, if growly, "You got us."

When his fingers dropped away, he moved his gaze back to the others. This time to Bucky, other things on his mind. Weapon things. "The bow guy. He got his bow with him?" The way he asked the question - chin up, head titled, eyes narrowed, fingers clenching with the itch to hold something - it was pretty clear there were plans already being made to make said bow his. If he could.

Might not be Daryl's kind of bow, but he could use one in a pinch.

Bucky watched her, smiling right back at her. When Daryl let her go, Buck had something to add before she was off too far. "Keep a weapon handy." She wouldn't have to make much noise for him to hear her should she find trouble. He kept his focus on her, even if it made Daryl's voice that much louder to him.

"No. And that made him jumpier around me." He nodded to the city in the distance. "If there's any kind of hunting and game store there, you're likely to find a bow."

"We can look, but those're usually the first places hit," he said as his shoulders relaxed. If bow-man didn't have his bow, then it wasn't worth putting any more effort into thinking about. "Might be some other shit worth grabbing, though."

Fish hooks, block and tackle, camp gear, that sort of thing. Lamps.

Glenn had smiled at all the introductions as well, giving a small 'that's me' wave at his own name and the mention they were family. They were. All the while, he was trying to keep his fascination with the metal arm to himself; even if there were so many questions begging to be asked. Not the time for it, and he wasn't sure how it would be received. The Bucky guy did look intimidating, and well - metal. arm. More good sense than fear within Glenn, those reactions. After the introductions, Glenn allowed his attention go to places where they could mark out to bury the supplies like Daryl mentioned.

However, conversation pulled him back; watching Daryl and Athena once more. "You do have us." He reinforced gently; allowing her to know that he was fully on board with what Daryl was saying. She was a kid, she needed a family - and he was happy to help anyone that his friend took such a liking to so readily. As Athena moved away from Daryl, Glenn tilted his head.

"You mind company?" He asked the girl, following behind her at a slow pace. Wondering if he would be accepted in her possible attempt at exploration. It would be better if people stuck to each other, in unknown situations, even if there were still people within hearing distance. Didn't make getting to one another fast enough an option if there wasn't time to do so. Problems didn't wait for people to get their shit together.

She wanted to explain to them that not having family wasn't necessarily a bad thing. She wasn't programmed to need or have one. Things are different for her here and she recognized the need to have people to form bonds with. So she cast them a tight lipped smile that seemed strained.

"If the city up ahead is anything like this, there won't be anything there in usable condition. I'm going to see if I can find anything worthwhile while we're here."

That was when she gave Glenn a less tense smile and a nod, going over to take hold of his hand. She was so used to being a guide and a recruiter that taking others by the hand was second nature to her now.

"We won't go out of sight." She spoke at Glenn specifically even though her voice was loud enough for everyone to hear. She tipped her head back enough to give him a curious look over. He seemed like a nice man, someone she could trust because Daryl called him family.

He was a little surprised when the girl took his hand, but he went with it regardless. Glenn gave her another smile, nodded his head in reply and was glad for her words; she got the idea of what was in his mind. She had sense. The tension in her smile a moment ago, however? That had drawn his curiosity. Glenn didn't pry, just yet - he didn't know her well enough to ask after such things. Still, he did want her to feel as though she belonged with them. Between him and Daryl, he felt that they could do just that.

"Thanks for having me along." He stated to her, wondering what she was making of him as she gazed at him. "I'm sure we'll find something; you'd be surprised at what people leave laying around while they're in a crisis." Then, he let his gaze linger on the state of things in their surroundings. "Though, depending upon how much time since someone has been here last? But, nah. Let's stay positive. We'll find something worthwhile."

[personal profile] pinner 2016-02-14 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
She wasn't used to being thanked for her company so she tried not to focus on the fact that Glenn had just done so. She focused on his being positive instead. That was a way of thinking that she could always get behind and agree with. Her eyes quickly scanned over the area and she tried really hard to make things seem positive.

"It doesn't look like anyone has been here in a very long time. A lifetime or longer. The best we can hope to find is a place to secure and hide our extra supplies until we can come back for them later."

She knew Daryl had mentioned the possibility of doing that and wanted to make it a possibility instead of just talk. She thought he'd appreciate it if she was able to make herself useful and do that. So she kept hold of Glenn's hand and guided him around the immediate area to look for a hiding spot.

He was right there with her, on those opinions about the area they were in. Still, he had to sail on SS Hope for a few minutes before any thought of a towel-throw-in came to mind. Stick to the decks of that ship for as long as possible; until the storm knocked you off in the sea, then grab for the closest floating thing that didn't have really sharp teeth.

"Well, you never know; if anyone figures out a way to open that hatch - there could be something under there." He gave a small shrug then, letting her lead the way. After a few minutes, he finally relented on what they could find versus what they could be doing. "I think you're right with the finding places to hide our supplies, though. We can get creative with that. Use what's here as markers and signs, too."
pinner: (action3)

[personal profile] pinner 2016-02-17 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Is there a way to creatively hide supplies?" She was amused when she responded and looked up at him. Her hand dropped his and she wandered off by herself. She made sure to stay within reaching distance but wanted to crouch down and pick up odds and ends that were on the ground. There was a rock that was large enough to be thrown and provide damage if she could find a way to accelerate it properly. It was promptly picked up and put into her backpack.

"I could crawl through the tall grass here and put the things we want to leave behind in the middle. I could make the area look undisturbed and no one would likely took over here since it isn't the house or the shed or anywhere important."
dirtypizzaboy: (on the fence)

[personal profile] dirtypizzaboy 2016-02-18 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
"There's always a creative way to do pretty much anything, if you put a little thought in to it." He replied, giving her another smile. Glenn was also laughing at himself, just a little. His hand was dropped, and he watched her go; then his eyes started to travel the area again, bringing it to memory.

His attention went back to her, and he listened to her suggestion. "Well, Daryl was talking about burying it. We could use that area though, since you're right about it being somewhere most people wouldn't look. Still, if enough of the grass gets broken, people might get clued in to it. Maybe we should pick another place, one where it'll be easier to cover our tracks when we leave it?"

As Glenn and Athena walked off, Daryl's eyes followed them. But once they were a fair distance away that they wouldn't easily overhear, mostly so Athena wouldn't overhear, Daryl turned his attention back to Bucky.

"Keep an eye on her when you can. She's capable, but she's still a kid," Daryl crossed his arms, fingers curling into the armholes of his vest, which was already tight against him because of the heavy coat he wore. He didn't want to chance losing it, though, so he hadn't taken it off yet. "Since three of us already feel like leaving, then I don't think we need to do much voting on it. We'll give them a few minutes to do whatever they're doing, then we'll pack up and go."

Steve chose that moment to walk into the room. After the seemingly dead body had attacked Bucky he was doing a sweep of the perimeter and the outlaying area to see what they were up against. Super soldier hearing and vision had its perks.

"Things looks clear up ahead." He said glancing at Bucky and then Daryl. "We should be able to make it to the city before night fall as long as we're careful. I didn't see anything out there but that doesn't mean we won't come across anything."

"You know how to handle what might pop up?" Daryl asked, now that Bucky's friend was staying still enough to talk to. They hadn't had much of an opportunity to talk yet. Daryl was taking Bucky's approval at face value.

Buck nodded at the request. "Already on it. I'll hear her if she gets in trouble." AKA: if you see him start running, Daryl, Athena needs rescuing. Daryl seemed to trust Glenn, so Bucky would too until proven otherwise.

He acknowledged Steve with a nod and a slight glance between the pair of leaders. He honestly hoped they approved of eachother or his life here would get very complicated.

Steve nodded taking in Daryl. He seemed to know what he was doing and if what he told Bucky was true he had more experience with this than anyone else here. Steve would trust that until proven otherwise. "Yeah, I got a weapon. It's not a shield but it will do."
dirtyredneck: (Neutral Interested (03))

[personal profile] dirtyredneck 2016-02-23 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
A shield? The man fought with a shield? What kind of messed up- You know what? No. He wasn't going even go down that path. There was already enough messed up shit. If he could accept green-skinned aliens and men with metal arms, he could accept that some pretty boy liked to bash people's faces in with a fucking shield.

"Good," he said. He'd accept the assertion at face value for now. The man wasn't trying to buck Daryl's authority, either. That was good, too. Mostly because if Buck hadn't encountered walkers, then Steve hadn't either, so he didn't some military spokes-model (or whatever the whole 'Captain America' shtick was about) trying to take charge and making stupid decisions.

"Once we get to the city and get inside, we find a place to sleep for the night. Doesn't have to be pretty or comfortable. Just gotta be secure and one we can cover the windows easy. Don't know how many walkers are inside the walls. But the city's got more buildings and gives us better choices in shelter. In the morning we'll start looking for something permanent. Priorities are being defensible and easy access to water. That means fences or thick walls. We can look to turn one of the neighborhoods into Pleasantville once we got a place we can hold and make our own. That kind of pretty living takes time."

He lifted a hand to rub his thumb over his mouth before chewing at it a moment, "Any place we find, we set a watch on. Everyone takes turns. There's four of us grown, we can do it at two three hour shifts a day. The girl's sharp but she's too willing to run into danger. She ain't getting on watch duty until she learns what she needs to. But she will go on it once she does. I also expect an equal share of the house duties. We take turns on the washing, the cooking, and any cleaning that comes along after we take a place. That understood?"

Daryl was purposely saying this while Athena was out of hearing distance. Girl was already too eager to prove herself, he didn't need her knowing the goal posts.

Don't knock the Shield until you see it in action. Daryl would not want to get hit by that thrown at full force by Steve.

Steve nodded, agreeing with everything Daryl was saying, it's what Steve would have done as well. "Good, that's what I was going to suggest. Something high up would be ideal, that way we can see if anything is coming for us down below. Easily defendable. I can position my archer up top, he'll see anything that's coming. I can take first watch and second if it's needed. I don't need that much sleep and I can see better in the dark than probably anyone else here. First light we're probably also going to want to see who else has made it to the city. Start figuring out what's going on exactly." Daryl might see a pretty boy army spokes model, but Steve has seen more than most people could even fathom. He doesn't really take well to being given orders.
dirtyredneck: (Neutral Conversation (05))

[personal profile] dirtyredneck 2016-03-02 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Nah, don't want anywhere too high up," Daryl disagreed immediately. "Not for general living. Guard tower's fine, but you get yourself high up, it don't matter how many you can see coming. They'll cut you off at the bottom all the same and then you gotta fight your way out every time you're looking to do a run. You want something you can spread them out around. Draw them off to one side while you open the door for everyone else."
