You awaken to godawful static overlaying a female voice that's too monotone to be anything but a recording. The static makes it difficult to understand the warning, but it's clearly a warning if your surroundings tell you anything...

You're buckled into a sturdy seat bolted to the wall behind you. Around you, there are dozens of others like you, some awake and others still unconscious, but it seems most of the seats lining the walls are occupied. The lights are dim, likely auxiliary lighting, leaving you mostly in the dark. You smell smoke and hear the sizzling crackle of electrical systems popping and shorting out. Some of the seats were jarred off the wall, leaving the occupants either wounded or dead. Count yourself lucky all you have is a headache and various aches accounted to whiplash.

You appear to be in a drop ship or an escape vessel of some form but the pilot is dead and the hull bears a massive gash where it buckled under the impact and sheered off. Through the door-sized opening, you can see vegetation. The air that wafts in is heavy with a humid heat, but it's obviously breathable.

Once you make your way outside, you'll see greenery: Trees, grass, and shrubs tangled with vines that grow wildly and suffocate the trees they climb. In the distance, behind the ship, you can make out a sandy desert that seems to stretch on endlessly. Forward through the trees, however, you may see a crumbling wall, but more importantly, you'll see signs of civilisation. Buildings and other structures seem contained within those decrepit walls. Maybe the natives can fill you in on what's going on, because the last thing you remember isn't being in an escape shuttle. As a matter of fact, you don't remember much about your arrival or where you are. But it's going to be a bit of a hike, better get moving. Though you might want to grab the backpack of supplies under your seat before you go.

"W̞͓̝͓̓̀̍̒͘͜ȃ̢̗̪̤͇̔̃̚͝░̟͙̯̳̱̈͂̈́̈́͠n̬̘̬̤̠͛̅̈́͋͝i͓̟͈͎͙̐̆̈́̔̓n̡̟̤̟̤̑͐͋͐̚g̩̱͖͉̻͌͛̈͆̈́!̧̪̰͇̦̓̂̆̌͝ ̢͔̣̠̗̾̉́̌̒C̢̥̟͍͊͊͑̀̚ͅr̛͙̪̙̟͐̽̓̅͜i̫͖̻̣̘̽̑͂̾̎t̩͇̦̬̞͊̌̑̈́͝i̡̳̠̞̐̿̍̎̀͜c̡͕͙͕͕̓̊̌̾͘å̼̯͍̙̲̍̏̚͝l̢̥͉̮̙̋̆͐̆́ ̢̰̞͕̯̋̈́̈́̋͌f͇͔̟̻̈̽͌̒̉ͅa̳̰̠͉͔͒̑̈̈͘i̟̭̦̺͎̍̾̽̈́̐░͕̣̥̭͛̿̓̽̐ͅ░̰̪̠͇͍̆͛̀͝͝░̘̱̩̳̘͆̈́̆̀̚e̛̻͈̳̳̺̊̔̚̕.͙̟̳̼̾̀̅͊͊ͅ"

With that, the power dies, leaving the drop ship in the dark, crackling and groaning as the hull cools from its catastrophic re-entry.

[Mod Note: In case you missed the testdrive, this is your chance to play out your arrival or any other intro CR]

Traversing the Forest

Between the crash and the ruined city is a lush forest full of skittish wild life, the ruins of a farmhouse-like structure, various flora, and the occasional body. Try not to get too close to those bodies, kids. They have a tendency to wake up and try to get ya. The closer to the city one gets, the more frequently they'll see a dormant body.

Hopefully you took the time to set up your small ear piece. Once inserted into the ear, the device will prompt you for your name. Once spoken, the device in your ear will be given its own address and all someone has to do is tap the button on their ear piece, speak "private to" then their friend's name, and it will open a private channel to the comm device coded with that name. Open radio signals can be sent by simply tapping the button and speaking.

Once you reach the city gates, you will find a mass of corpses piled against the closed gates. These corpses will stir when they catch the scent of the survivors or hear their approach. You may want to take care of the dormant infected before they fully regain awareness. Or, you know, trip the closest person to you and run like hell. Maybe they'll be too distracted chewing on your former friend to follow...

Once inside the city, you'll meet its only surviving occupant. He's a bit unique and a bit... well... he's unique.

⨷ TK Baha's Warm Welcome

[TALK]

"Smells like livin' folk. Yer just lucky I got no munitions left."

Sitting on a porch with a shotgun balanced in his lap was a scarred gentleman wearing dark goggle-like glasses. He was missing a leg and looked a little worse for the wear. His voice was thick with a drawl, but he seemed to be well and alive. He chuckled and lowered the shotgun back to his lap, patting the barrel.

"Naw, ain't seen nothin' worth shootin' in a long time. Heehee! Ohhh-hoo boy, you lot've seen better days. Well, come on over here and git that gate shut before somethin' with an appetite thinks we're open for business." TK smiled and laughed again, beckoning the shipwrecked survivors to come closer. "Let's see. First things first, you lot gotta have somewhere to stay. Hotel's open an' prices 're cheaper than ever! Forgive the staff, they ain't too lively, though if you know what I mean. Heeheehee! You get it, right? 'cause they're all dead. Make yerselves at home. You're gonna be here a while."

TK pulls out an old, worn, folded pamphlet and holds it out. There are plenty to go around. "This here's a tourist's guide ta everythin' ya need to know. Or, well, kinda some of it. Anyway, it's useful. Take it. The name's TK Baha and I been around these parts a while. Anything you need, you let me know, okay?"

"You got a good set a' legs, right? See, I gotta ask you a favour. I ain't been keeping up with things. Gonna need you to find me a power cell for this here transceiver. Think I stashed the last one at the hotel reception desk. Or was it the minimart? The fuel station? Anyway, you get me that and I'll get this here piece of scrap workin' again."

And those people would be cowards.

[ She dragged the body away by its leg, only pausing to look back when Daryl had put another one down. When it's apparent he was fine, she finished pulling it the rest of the way and swung it up onto the next pile like it weighed nothing (which, with how gaunt it was, may as well be the truth).

Speaking of that pile, she scowled at it. This was going to take too long, even with help. Of all things she thought she would be stuck doing ever...
]

Fair enough. Though that's assuming it wasn't stripped bare by whoever holed up here before.

Don't usually happen 'less there's a group big enough. If there is, we'd do best to worry more about them than about what we can find.

[Groups were a bigger danger than walkers. Big groups especially. They had more to protect and more people to do the protecting with.

And speaking of groups...]

You uh... you got anyone? Here?

[personal profile] stabbyterms 2016-02-13 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Chances are they are all dead. They don't even have lookouts stationed anywhere on the wall, not even a place for them to take cover and keep watch.

[ All things she'd been sure to make note of, even before they left the shelter the forest had offered. That said, she turned to walk back towards the pile at the gate. ]

And yes. If you see a big idiot swinging a tree branch around, he's with me.

Don't need to watch the wall to have a place in the city. A building will do just as good. Easier to protect, too. Less space to guard.

[She was thinking in too big of terms. Groups could get on just fine in what was left of motels or an apartment building. Hell, even an auto shop. All they needed was a place with enough room for everyone to lay down and store food. Walls to put between them and the dead.]

Already met him.

[And the fact that she was with him surprised Daryl. Guy hadn't been bad with his tree branch, but he'd been pretty flippant about everything. Didn't seem like he'd last long. That she was claiming him as hers just seemed odd. But he wasn't going to question it. Daryl had a pretty motley group he called family, himself.]

You got any others? Or it just you two?
stabbyterms: (011;)

[personal profile] stabbyterms 2016-02-13 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Him and everyone else, she would imagine. It isn't a team-up most would expect, someone as serious-seeming as Gamora and... Peter Quill. Still, wise move not to judge out loud. There were reasons Peter had earned her respect (even if she could count the number of times she'd questioned it on both hands already). ]

Just the two. Our ship's crew is a small one, though what they've done with the others... [ Or their ship. Gamora yanked the next body up and worked out a moment of aggression by bodily hurling it after two steps of dragging, right over onto pile #2. ] I don't know, but whoever dropped us down here will be very sorry if they've harmed them.

[ Pro-tip: do not mess with Gamora's friends. ]

And that's pointless. Nowhere inside would be safe if something managed to breach the wall. One building is only easy to protect when you're either prepared for a siege or not expecting one to begin with.

[ While she could understand the thought of defending only one place, what was the point of walls if they weren't to be carefully maintained? Anything could get in. Of course, a siege was a worse case scenario. ]

The dead don't got the smarts for a siege. It's other survivors you gotta watch out for. And if there's some inside, about the size of us that made it through the crash, they ain't gonna watch the wall or try and keep it whole. They're gonna pick a place or two and keep them safe. The wall just makes it easier to keep most of the dead outta the streets.

[So she had a family, too. Like his. And she thought it cowardly not to help a little girl protect herself from the dead. She seemed like good people.]

Putting a group together. Got five of us right now. Got room for more.

[He said it quietly, head down, hands on his hips. But his eyes were looking over at her. Trying to make the invitation one he didn't have to go around asking if she wanted to team up. He trusted her with Athena. And he'd seen how many walkers she'd killed. Not being human and all.

Her friend he could care less about protecting, but if they were together, then he could go along with the package deal thing.]

A group for what?

[ Weren't they already a group? A group of poor saps stranded on a shitty world?

Gamora returned, again, to the pile at the gates. One corpse proved to still be making that poor unlife choice of moving as she approached. That one, she put a boot on its neck, holding it down as it squirmed, grabbed, and chomped at air uselessly. It was almost curious to watch, just as much as it was gruesome.
]

They wouldn't need any smarts to begin with to block all the exits of a building en masse, either. They would only need more of them than of whoever was inside.

To survive.

[To him it was obvious that they needed to group up. Not everyone who was dropped was necessarily capable or trust worthy. Including them automatically was not a course of action Daryl had considered.

She had her foot on that one, but wasn't making to kill it fast. Made him nervous. He fingered his knife, ready to throw it if he had to.]

Don't let 'em scratch you. Even if you cain't get infected one way, there's still a lot of diseases the dead carry. Fever could kill you.

And when there's a lot, you can funnel them. Fight them smart. One or two at a time through a door. Just gotta have the people to do it. A group you trust.

[personal profile] stabbyterms 2016-02-14 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get sick.

[ Stated with the certainty of someone who really, truly believes that. As such, the zombie -- walker, undead, whatever -- didn't scare her so much, not now, when the easier targets had all since moved out of reach. ]

And why do you think Peter and I need a bigger group to survive?

[ While it wasn't the worst idea, "teaming up" was still a new concept for Gamora. It had worked out back on Xandar, sure, but would it work out here? With even more strangers? ]
dirtyredneck: (Neutral Stare (06))

[personal profile] dirtyredneck 2016-02-14 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Cause if one of you gets hurt, you're gonna need at least a third to watch your backs while the other watches your fronts.

[He answered with the self-assurance of someone who's been living the kind of life she was going to have to start getting used to.]

You need people to survive. And people ain't just one other.
stabbyterms: (013;)

[personal profile] stabbyterms 2016-02-14 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Gamora could watch both fronts if she wanted to. Probably. Still... ]

Who else is in this group of yours?

The girl.

[Daryl nodded across the way towards where Glenn was doing his own thing.]

Him.

[He had to turn and look around a bit more to find Bucky and Steve.]

The guy with the metal arm and his friend in the red, white, and blue get up.

[Small group, but good so far.]
stabbyterms: (009;)

[personal profile] stabbyterms 2016-02-14 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Metal arm and red, white, and blue get-up do not, in fact, sound weird to Gamora. There are far stranger things in space. She did look towards Glenn, though, taking note of him.

And the girl...
]

You mean Athena. [ Considering they had been discussing her earlier, it was an easy guess. ] I...

[ Shouldn't turn the man down outright. ]

I will consider it. [ At that point, Gamora finally decided to off the walker underfoot. She knelt down as she drew her knife, boot still firmly on the corpse's neck, and finished it with a stab up through the eye. Quick, clean, simple. That done, she glanced back over at Daryl. ] Though I will need to speak with Peter first.
dirtyredneck: (Action Moving (6))

[personal profile] dirtyredneck 2016-02-14 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Only girl here.

[The rest of the women were fully grown. Some of guys, they might qualify as boys still. But not the women. It was just Athena for that distinction.]

Sure.

[He understood the need to talk it out. Not every person or group wanted to join up with others. That was just how it was.

He nodded his head and turned away, got back to the whole moving bodies thing. They still had a ways to go and not much time before the sun started to sink beyond the horizon. Better to be inside the walls before nightfall.]
