You awaken to godawful static overlaying a female voice that's too monotone to be anything but a recording. The static makes it difficult to understand the warning, but it's clearly a warning if your surroundings tell you anything...

You're buckled into a sturdy seat bolted to the wall behind you. Around you, there are dozens of others like you, some awake and others still unconscious, but it seems most of the seats lining the walls are occupied. The lights are dim, likely auxiliary lighting, leaving you mostly in the dark. You smell smoke and hear the sizzling crackle of electrical systems popping and shorting out. Some of the seats were jarred off the wall, leaving the occupants either wounded or dead. Count yourself lucky all you have is a headache and various aches accounted to whiplash.

You appear to be in a drop ship or an escape vessel of some form but the pilot is dead and the hull bears a massive gash where it buckled under the impact and sheered off. Through the door-sized opening, you can see vegetation. The air that wafts in is heavy with a humid heat, but it's obviously breathable.

Once you make your way outside, you'll see greenery: Trees, grass, and shrubs tangled with vines that grow wildly and suffocate the trees they climb. In the distance, behind the ship, you can make out a sandy desert that seems to stretch on endlessly. Forward through the trees, however, you may see a crumbling wall, but more importantly, you'll see signs of civilisation. Buildings and other structures seem contained within those decrepit walls. Maybe the natives can fill you in on what's going on, because the last thing you remember isn't being in an escape shuttle. As a matter of fact, you don't remember much about your arrival or where you are. But it's going to be a bit of a hike, better get moving. Though you might want to grab the backpack of supplies under your seat before you go.

"W̞͓̝͓̓̀̍̒͘͜ȃ̢̗̪̤͇̔̃̚͝░̟͙̯̳̱̈͂̈́̈́͠n̬̘̬̤̠͛̅̈́͋͝i͓̟͈͎͙̐̆̈́̔̓n̡̟̤̟̤̑͐͋͐̚g̩̱͖͉̻͌͛̈͆̈́!̧̪̰͇̦̓̂̆̌͝ ̢͔̣̠̗̾̉́̌̒C̢̥̟͍͊͊͑̀̚ͅr̛͙̪̙̟͐̽̓̅͜i̫͖̻̣̘̽̑͂̾̎t̩͇̦̬̞͊̌̑̈́͝i̡̳̠̞̐̿̍̎̀͜c̡͕͙͕͕̓̊̌̾͘å̼̯͍̙̲̍̏̚͝l̢̥͉̮̙̋̆͐̆́ ̢̰̞͕̯̋̈́̈́̋͌f͇͔̟̻̈̽͌̒̉ͅa̳̰̠͉͔͒̑̈̈͘i̟̭̦̺͎̍̾̽̈́̐░͕̣̥̭͛̿̓̽̐ͅ░̰̪̠͇͍̆͛̀͝͝░̘̱̩̳̘͆̈́̆̀̚e̛̻͈̳̳̺̊̔̚̕.͙̟̳̼̾̀̅͊͊ͅ"

With that, the power dies, leaving the drop ship in the dark, crackling and groaning as the hull cools from its catastrophic re-entry.

Traversing the Forest

Between the crash and the ruined city is a lush forest full of skittish wild life, the ruins of a farmhouse-like structure, various flora, and the occasional body. Try not to get too close to those bodies, kids. They have a tendency to wake up and try to get ya. The closer to the city one gets, the more frequently they'll see a dormant body.

Hopefully you took the time to set up your small ear piece. Once inserted into the ear, the device will prompt you for your name. Once spoken, the device in your ear will be given its own address and all someone has to do is tap the button on their ear piece, speak "private to" then their friend's name, and it will open a private channel to the comm device coded with that name. Open radio signals can be sent by simply tapping the button and speaking.

Once you reach the city gates, you will find a mass of corpses piled against the closed gates. These corpses will stir when they catch the scent of the survivors or hear their approach. You may want to take care of the dormant infected before they fully regain awareness. Or, you know, trip the closest person to you and run like hell. Maybe they'll be too distracted chewing on your former friend to follow...

Once inside the city, you'll meet its only surviving occupant. He's a bit unique and a bit... well... he's unique.

⨷ TK Baha's Warm Welcome

[TALK]

"Smells like livin' folk. Yer just lucky I got no munitions left."

Sitting on a porch with a shotgun balanced in his lap was a scarred gentleman wearing dark goggle-like glasses. He was missing a leg and looked a little worse for the wear. His voice was thick with a drawl, but he seemed to be well and alive. He chuckled and lowered the shotgun back to his lap, patting the barrel.

"Naw, ain't seen nothin' worth shootin' in a long time. Heehee! Ohhh-hoo boy, you lot've seen better days. Well, come on over here and git that gate shut before somethin' with an appetite thinks we're open for business." TK smiled and laughed again, beckoning the shipwrecked survivors to come closer. "Let's see. First things first, you lot gotta have somewhere to stay. Hotel's open an' prices 're cheaper than ever! Forgive the staff, they ain't too lively, though if you know what I mean. Heeheehee! You get it, right? 'cause they're all dead. Make yerselves at home. You're gonna be here a while."

TK pulls out an old, worn, folded pamphlet and holds it out. There are plenty to go around. "This here's a tourist's guide ta everythin' ya need to know. Or, well, kinda some of it. Anyway, it's useful. Take it. The name's TK Baha and I been around these parts a while. Anything you need, you let me know, okay?"

"You got a good set a' legs, right? See, I gotta ask you a favour. I ain't been keeping up with things. Gonna need you to find me a power cell for this here transceiver. Think I stashed the last one at the hotel reception desk. Or was it the minimart? The fuel station? Anyway, you get me that and I'll get this here piece of scrap workin' again."

That rather abrupt observation drew a choked chuckle from him and he flexed the metal fingers, lifting the arm into better view. When she touched it, he stilled. He didn't pull away or jerk at all, just went very still.

"Not exactly." He finally answered. "I fell and I think my real arm was beyond repair. I kinda only remember bits and pieces but they kept upgrading it after they attached it. It isn't something I've seen often before, either."

"I think the technology behind it is wonderful. Comparered to what I'm used to, it's like magic." He agreed. "But the arm was built to be more than a prosthetic replacement. The fact that this technology exists is a miracle. It should be used to help people, not hurt people. And this was designed to hurt people." But he would do everything in his power to use it to help people.

Even if the conversation was an odd one for him, neither it nor her curiosity bothered him. "What about you? What kind of tech are you used to?"

She listened to him speak and by the time he was done she gave a dreamy sigh. She loved hearing about any kind of technology and innovation and it sounds like his arm is very innovative for where he's from.

"I trust you won't hurt people." Her fingers lingered against the cool metal for a few seconds longer before retracting and going to press against her own arm. It might look like she was pretending what having a metal arm was like, but she was wondering if her bones were still metal.

"The place I come from was all about technology and moving forward. Scientists were working together to make prosthetic limbs and audio-animatronics that were so realistic no one could tell they weren't human. My friend Frank Walker designed jet packs. They were always my favorite tech there, even if they weren't practical."

"I'll do everything I can not to betray that trust." Steve was here and that meant there was someone here strong enough to stop him if he somehow reverted back to the Winter Soldier. He'd already warned Daryl of what could happen and what to do if it did. They seemed to be in enough danger without having to worry about one of their own going mindless assassin on them.

"You would've loved the Stark Expo. That guy was crazy smart. He was all about innovation and interesting ideas. He built a prototype hover car. Stark Reversion Technology, he called it. That was a long time ago, though." Like 70 years or so, but who's counting? "It's some pretty amazing stuff."

"Jet packs? They actually worked? That's incredible." Her uplifting attitude was almost infectious.
pinner: (second.)

[personal profile] pinner 2016-02-13 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
"There was a hover car prototype at the 1964 World's Fair. It was wonderful to see one in New York." She thought that she definitely would have enjoyed meeting Stark and seeing his inventions. She likely would have tried recruiting him for Tomorrowland.

"If we can find the right parts here, I could try building a jet pack to use. It isn't as hard as it seems." She was maybe a little too eager when talking about creating and inventing things but it was one of her interests.

No matter how much she loved dreaming and inventing she knew that this wasn't the right place to talk about it. There were dead bodies nearby and they bothered her. So she took hold of his metal hand and started walking, guiding him away to a spot near the farmhouse death hadn't touched yet.

zimasoldier: (Yeah but)

[personal profile] zimasoldier 2016-02-19 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"You're a pretty bright kid. Think you can really pull that off with the scraps we find around here?" He was incredibly interested in the idea, even if only for the novelty of it.

He allowed himself to be easily tugged along, gently curling the metal fingers to hold her hand. So long as she wasn't prone to picking fights with jerks, she'd be much easier to protect than his last charge. Sadly, she could probably handle herself better than Steve did when he was little.

"You're handling all this pretty well. When I was your age, I think I would've been a little less composed."
pinner: (poised2)

[personal profile] pinner 2016-02-19 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"If I let everyone see how worried and afraid I am, I'll become more of a liability." She wasn't blind to the fact that she was likely being protected by Daryl and the others out of an obligation to make sure a child didn't get hurt.

"I'm very afraid." She looked around the area until her eyes fell on Daryl and the others. "But no one else can know that."
zimasoldier: (Respects)

[personal profile] zimasoldier 2016-02-19 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The former assassin paused, looking at her with a mixture of understanding and sorrow. He knelt in front of her to put himself directly on eye level and rested a hand on her shoulder.

"I won't say a word. But you know, fear doesn't make you weak. It keeps you alive and sharp. If you rush into a snake pit without fear, you'll end up getting bit. Don't let it control you, but if you use it wisely and trust it, it'll keep you safer than any of us can."

"We're all a little afraid. It's natural. Some just hide it better."
pinner: (somber3)

[personal profile] pinner 2016-02-19 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"You don't understand. I've never felt fear before. Not like this."

She couldn't get into the specifics of why that was but felt comfortable enough around Bucky to be as close to honest as she could. "I don't understand or particularly enjoy it."

With him crouching it was easy to make eye contact. With a shaky hand she touched at his cheek with her fingertips in order to feel his skin. He had a metal arm and seemed so composed a part of her wanted him to be like she was. Or had been prior to waking up at the crash site here. But he was human and he couldn't possibly understand what she was trying to say.

"You hide what you're feeling remarkably well."
zimasoldier: (Concern)

[personal profile] zimasoldier 2016-02-20 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"I might understand a little better than you think." He didn't pull away from her touch, but after a moment, he lifted his real hand to cover hers and moved her fingertips from his cheek to the shoulder of his metal arm, just over the red star.

"This arm was given to me by some not very nice people. They did things to me that changed me. What they did--it was... They erased me. They took everything I was and wiped it clean and programmed what they wanted into my head. I was unfeeling. I was cold. I had no free will and I obeyed every order they gave me without question. It's like I was a machine. I forgot who I was, and then I was sent to--" She's just a kid, Bucky... He shook his head and rephrased his train of thought. "A friend of mine from a long time ago found me and woke me up from that nightmare, but I couldn't remember him. I felt fear. Unbearable fear for the first time in my existence. I couldn't remember ever feeling anything before, and suddenly, I was terrified. So scared, I didn't listen to him. I didn't want to feel, especially this unbridled terror that I felt. I ignored him. I fought him. I nearly--" Again, he censored himself mid sentence. "Point is, I know what it's like to never feel fear, then suddenly, have it dumped on you with the full force of a train wreck. It may not be exactly what you're going through, but I can sympathise." He merely thought it was because she was so young and so inexperienced in the world.

"I hide it because people are counting on me. If I show fear now, everyone looking to me for strength will feel that fear and panic." He moved his hand away from hers finally and settled it back on her shoulder, giving it a light, comforting squeeze.

"No one enjoys feeling afraid. But, like all things, the sting of it will fade into something manageable. And hopefully, when we get settled down somewhere safer, it won't linger quite so strongly." This felt, to him, like an incredibly deep conversation to be having with someone so young, but he just had a terrible weakness for kids.
