Athena had seen and done many things in her life. She had experienced sadness and something close to fear but neither emotion could prepare her for what she felt as she saw the pile of bodies against the gates. She knew about death and knew the appropriate human emotions that went along with the loss of someone close to them. None of these people were close to Athena, as far as she knew. That didn't prevent emotion from rising and making the horror of the situation feel so real that it nearly smothered her.

Everything had seemed like a fun adventure up until that point. Now the reality of things was sinking in.

She stood as tall as she could despite wanting to go and hide. Her eyes were wide and quickly filling with tears as she tried to figure out the logic in what had happened. She needed to know what had happened in order to try and understand. Once she understood the feelings she was having for the first time everything would be easier.

"What do you think -"

She tried to speak to someone that was nearby but the sound of stirring among the pile of bodies got her to stop talking and start backing away instead. Her hand went to her backpack, where she fought to try and get the knife she had been given out. They needed to get through the gates or find another way in.
